Patricia’s Story

Constant Diets

I wish I would have figured out 30 years ago that diets don’t work!  Think of any crazy diet - “Hollywood Star Diet”, the “Broth Diet”, the “Weight-Watchers diet”… I’ve tried them all.  Yea sure, I initially lost weight on each of them, but overall, I’ve gained more and more weight over time.  Restricting food has increased my cravings and my portion sizes – and eventually my clothes size.  Cut the yo-yo string, please!

Mom Food Scientist

Be honest, pre-packaged gluten-free foods taste terrible!  Then throw in no butter, no cream…seriously how can my family enjoy sweet treats without the good stuff?  Both my children were born with food sensitivities to gluten and dairy.  I could not win!  Hence my obsession with high nutrient, kid friendly treats!  When I became a mom, my career had to change overnight from business executive to “mom food scientist”.

Hit by Menopause

Think of a head-on car crash where no one hits the brakes.  I was wholly unprepared when I was hit full force in my mid-forties with a breast cancer scare, unexpected weight gain and the danger of type-2-diabetes.  I went to the gym 4 times a week, did cardio and weights, and was training for a sprint triathlon - but that was never enough!  It was time for me to take a hard look at my eating habits and figure out scientifically how to stop making food my enemy.

Mindful Eating

My health journey eventually led me to ditch all diets and I learned how to practice Mindful Eating.  I celebrate eating, genuinely, enjoy food and really listening to my body.  I don’t deny myself any type of food.  I taste each bite and I tune into my hunger and satiety signals.  I am now naturally at a lower weight that I have no problem staying at.  Realizing how certain foods make me feel, I now shop for wholefoods, if possible, from organic and sustainable farming.

Refined Sugar-Free

Trying to balance my blood sugars while still enjoying sweets:  This is where Megan’s recipes come in.  When I first met Megan, she fed me samples of 12 different bakes in the one afternoon.  I savored each – and was expecting the usual sugar high and sugar crash which come with sweet treats.  Well the sugar roller coaster never came.  Megan’s treats satisfied my hunger and they gave me energy instead of a sugar high.  I couldn’t believe that I could bake and eat to satisfy my sweet tooth without spiking my blood sugar!
